Nadya Vessey swims with the help of her new fins

The Telegraph reported yesterday that a disabled woman in New Zealand got a mermaid tail to help her swim. Nadya Vessey was born with a condition that limited her legs from fully developing and she had to have them amputated when she was 16.

But with the help of Weta Workshop, which won an Academy Award for its costumes in “Lord of the Rings” and made amazing visuals for “Chronicles of Narnia” and “King Kong,” she is swimming again.

“I never had a fantasy to be a mermaid,” says Vessey. “I am still getting used to it because it requires you to swim in a different way.”

The mermaid tail is made with wetsuit fabric and plastic molds.
